Minister: RM20mil industrial estate will be built to spur SME growth

LUNDU: An industrial estate costing RM20mil will be built in the Tanjong Datu constituency to spur the growth of SMEs in Lundu-Sematan.

Sarawak Industrial and Entrepre­neur Development, Trade and Investment Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the focus would be on cottage and food industries, as well as agriculture, fisheries and eco-tourism sectors.

Funds for the project have been approved and the state is currently in the midst of securing a site for the proposed 20.23ha industrial park.

He said the first phase of construction on a 13ha site is targeted to commence this year.

“This industrial park is built under the SME concept to cater for local entrepreneurs and manufacturers as part of government effort to overcome the lack of industrial parks in small districts across the state.

“The industrial estate in Tanjong Datu will spur the growth of local SMEs, provide an avenue for pro­duct improvement and innovation as well as to strengthen promotion and export to foreign market,” Awang Tengah said at a seminar to empower entrepreneurs in the food industry here yesterday.

He said the industrial park would have room for expansion depending on future growth and needs.
