The Rise of Mobility-as-a-Service

The unlocked phone business is the latest trend, and one that holds bright prospects. It presents solution providers with the opportunity to offer Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) solutions, much like Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS). These solutions will offer customers flexibility and will allow service providers to create mobile packages with better margins. 

Mike Coleman, head of mobile channel sales at Samsung Electronics, avers that the unlocked phone business has been growing exponentially. In 2016, global sales of cellphones reached about billion-and-a-half units, of which 12% were unlocked. These unlocked phones allow mobile service providers to offer packages that can be used for better personal transportation management. 

Unlocked phones present a new freedom of mobility, which is required for MaaS offerings. For example, customers can buy a packet of unlocked phones and disperse them among many carriers. SIM cards from each of those carriers can be inserted into the phones. According to Coleman, this model presents unending opportunities for unique mobile services, and mobile solution providers must start investing in their mobile practices from this perspective. 

MaaS is an upcoming solution to transportation woes. It allows managing one’s public and private transport through mobile. The concept has been applied in Finland, wherein Helsinki residents were able to download an app called Whim. Through this app, they were able to not only plan and avail mobility
